WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE
How to Choose your First Dance Song
15TH APRIL 2020
DJ Sebina is a Norfolk Wedding DJ. Recently I spoke to her about how to choose your wedding first dance song.
The traditional first dance hasn’t always been a tradition. According to Wikipedia, the first dance in a wedding reception was for the guests to dance to a song and the newlywed couple would join in after their guests and would gradually move around the room changing partners as the evening went on. This was when ballroom dancing was vastly known in society, unlike it is today!
Nowadays, people can opt for a range of styles for their first dance. Most couples choose a slow first dance song together without choreography. There are so many options to couples for their first dance! To have a choreographed dance? Invite your wedding guests to join you in your first dance? Include any special effects to make it a dance to remember?
Choosing the First Dance Song – Where to Start?
When it comes to the song choice it can seem like a daunting minefield. I speak from experience after trying to choose my own first dance song for my wedding! People have different reasons for choosing their perfect song. Some people chose the song which featured at their first date. Some people like the current slow song in the charts. There is no right or wrong song at all, it just needs to feel right for you and your partner to dance to.
Some of my couples pick a song for their first dance that has a special meaning for them. Either a first dance song that reminds them of then they first met or of an event. Others will choose a song that fit’s in with the theme of their wedding day.
Whether you are a romantic or you want to go for something a bit more upbeat. The key thing is to remember that the song is your choice. It is your wedding!
