Should You Have A Wedding Hashtag?

5 Reasons to have an outdoor first dance

One thing that is always worth considering for your wedding day, is to create a wedding hashtag to make your day even more memorable. I have seen this done many times in my work as a Wedding Videographer in Norfolk.

What is a Wedding Hashtag?

A hashtag is a keyword or phrase preceded by “#” on social media. It helps users categorize and group posts with similar topics. This makes it easier for users to find and connect with related content. A wedding Hashtag is a custom version that many couples set up in advance of their wedding day. For example #thestevenswedding.

Why Have a Wedding Hashtag?

In the world of social media, many of your guests will have their camera phones and upload their experiences of the day. Your wedding photographer and videographer will capture all the important moments of the day professionally. However, guests often capture their own unique perspectives of the day, which can be fun to see as well.

By creating a unique hashtag and encouraging all your guests to use it when they share their photos on social media, you will create a virtual wedding album that can be enjoyed by everyone.

How to Choose Your Wedding Hashtag

There are several different ways you could use to choose the perfect wedding hashtag. Below I have a few suggestions that might help get the creative juices going!

  • Combine both names: Think of ways to blend your names, surnames, or initials.
  • Can you add the date: Incorporate your wedding date for uniqueness.
  • Make sure it’s short and sweet: Keep it concise for easy recall.
  • Check the availability: Ensure it’s not already in use on social media, you don’t want your pictures getting lost in an already popular hashtag.
  • Make sure you test it: Share with friends to see what they think.
  • Memorable and pronounceable: Make sure you choose something easy to remember and say aloud.
  • Reflect Your Style: Match the wording of the hashtag to your wedding’s theme.

The key thing to remember is that this should be a fun addition to your day!

Promote Your Wedding Hashtag

Once you have your chosen hashtag, it’s important to think how people will see it on the day. You want as many people to see the hashtag so that they use it on their posts.

One place to start is at the beginning, get it on your invitations, make it clear from the start you would love to see their pictures. You could also create some printouts to have on your wedding tables so your guests can start documenting your wedding through their eyes! I have often seen couples have hashtags added to all their signage on the day, be that welcome signs or even the cake, the more people see it the more they will remember to use it.

Oh, and one thing that is often forgotten. Many of your wedding suppliers, from your photographer to your cake maker, will probably be sharing things on social media. It’s important not to forget to tell your suppliers about your hashtag so that anything they share will be added too!

Should You Have A Wedding Hashtag?

If you’re not having a completely unplugged ceremony or specifically asked your guests not to post on social media, having a wedding hashtag is a great idea and one I would always happily recommend!
